What the price includes
- Thailand's compulsory motor insurance. It covers injuries to people, not the bike.
- Two helmets and a phone holder.
- A full tank at the start. Bring it back full.
- Help by phone or message if the bike has a fault. A genuine mechanical fault is ours to sort out.
- Distance, added up over the whole month. Beyond it is ฿2 a kilometre.
What you pay on top
- Fuel. Gasohol 95 is 41.44 baht a litre and a 125 to 160 cc scooter does about 45 to 60 km on one. 20 km a day for a month is about ฿414–553.
- The deposit. ฿3,000 in cash or by Thai QR. It comes back in full when the bike returns in the same condition. We never keep your passport.
- Damage, punctures and tyres, if they happen. The rental terms give the estimated costs.
Against taxis, app cars and the train
A commute of 10 km each way, 22 working days.
| How | The month | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| MRT, if both ends are on the line | up to ฿1,936 | At the top fare of ฿44 a ride. The cheapest way, where it goes. |
| Metered taxi | about ฿4,136 | In moving traffic. Rush hour adds to every ride. |
| App car (Grab, Bolt) | ฿4,752–6,380 | The legal band for a small car, before busy-hour increases. |
| Scooter, Yamaha Fazzio 125 | ฿5,784–5,885 | Rental and fuel. Evenings and weekends cost only the fuel. |
For the commute alone, the taxi meter comes to less than the scooter when traffic is moving, and app cars to about the same as it. The difference is everything else you do in a month: every extra ride by taxi is another fare, and on the scooter it is a few baht. The break-even is roughly 2.1 taxi rides of 10 km a day.
If you live and work beside the same train line, the train is cheaper than either. See is it worth renting a scooter in Bangkok for when not to rent.
Renting or buying
For a stay of a few months, renting is the simple choice: no paperwork, no servicing, and you hand the bike back when you leave.
Buying can cost less over a long stay. It also means putting the bike in your name, which for a foreigner needs a long-stay visa and a Certificate of Residence, paying road tax and insurance each year, and selling the bike before you go. We handle the ownership transfer from ฿2,000 plus government fees, and we buy scooters too. Used scooters we have for sale are listed on the sales page.
